Is ADHD Overdiagnosed?

US Federal laws designed to identify and treat learning disabled children are serving as a powerful incentive for public schools to over-diagnose and medicate children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a panel has told an education subcommittee of Congress.

  • Diagnosis of the disorder has jumped nearly 5-fold recently.

  • Currently over 5 million children are diagnosed with the disorder.

Some have attributed the rise to the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which steers money to school districts so that they can treat disabled children, since it can give schools an incentive to label children with ADHD.

Others on the panel argued that a lack of mental health professionals in public schools, not IDEA, was to blame for the push to identify children with ADHD in schools.

They said that overcrowded classrooms and a paucity of training among teachers in dealing with behavior problems force the teachers to push for the calming effect of Ritalin and other drugs for hyperactive students.

Often the subject of the hearings shifted to a debate about whether ADHD is a true mental disorder, or whether the illness is simply an excuse for psychiatrists and drug companies to label unusual or rambunctious children to create a market for health services and medications.

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Although there may be some over-diagnosis, due to factors stated above, as well as the very broad definition of the disorder, which has recently prompted legal action, I believe that ADHD has truly increased.

Although there is a powerful incentive to increase the number of children with this diagnosis from the drug companies, other factors have contributed to this increase. The increase in vaccinations, mercury exposure, processed foods, pesticide use, television watching, sugar intake, environmental pollution, fluoridated water, divorce rates and other emotional instability problems at home, increase rates of birth interventions, resulting in birth trauma and lack of oxygen for newborns.

Many parents with children with ADD/ADHD try the Feingold Diet and some have good results with it. Although it is a step in the right direction and eliminates many suboptimal foods, it would be dramatically more effective if it incorporated restriction of sugars and grains and the avoidance of milk and dairy products.

How You Can Help Support The Web Site Development

One of the ways that you can help support the web site is that you can now purchase books through Amazon by clicking through on my web site. I obtain a tiny percentage of the sale and that will help support my ability to provide high quality content at no charge to you. However this will only work if you click on No More Ritalin. It does not work if you go directly to Amazon. I am only recommending books that I would purchase for my own home library. This book is currently in my library.

I think it is important for people to realize what ADHD actually is.  If one considers Depression, most people are aware that almost everyone goes through a major depressive episode at least once in their lives (often caused by the death of a loved one for example).  When  a "diagnosis"  of Depression is made and "treatment" is considered is only supposed to be when the "disorder" seems to be interfering with the sufferer's functioning and daily living for an extended period of time (longer than expected).  Some people might grieve "normally" and get on with their lives, while some may need help getting past the trauma, due to several factors.  Some people for various reasons including personal experiences, diet, coping skills, etc. have chronic episodes of depression requiring constant vigilence.

Likewise is how I view other mental "disorders" such as ADHD.  Of course we have all had times of forgetfulness, attention span issues, where we can't remember someone's name we just met, or even someone we know quite well.  Many factors interfere with memory, attention and focus such as stress, emotional trauma, diet and the list goes on.  ADHD is not supposed to be "diagnosed" unless it has been going on for a long time and interferes with "normal" daily functioning.  YES, it does happen and NO these people are not "lazy" or looking for an excuse.  I do believe it is misdiagnosed more than being overdiagnosed.  I think some kids who could benefit greatly from some kind of intervention are being held back because their parents are not willing to consider ADHD, yet I also can't believe my eyes when I read about 2 year olds being "diagnosed" with the disorder!!  What 2 year old DOESN'T have all the symptoms of ADHD...?? What a tragedy!

I am highly interested in learning more about nutrition and ADHD as I believe the world would be a better place if we could get kids off of the dangerous chemicals that are now being used to "treat" these disorders. Thanks Dr Mercola!
