Genetically engineered crops are now banned from Jackson County.
Hoffman Estates, IL (PRWEB) May 22, 2014 – History was made Tuesday as Jackson County, OR, passed Measure 15-119 – the first such bill that bans genetically engineered (GE) crops from being grown in Jackson County.
“This is a pivotal win, one that moves beyond labeling and protects the entire food-to-consumer principle,” says Steve Rye, CEO of Mercola Health Resources, one of the top donators to the campaign to vote yes on Measure 15-119.
As Americans band together and say “no” to GMOs (genetically modified organisms), food manufacturers will have to reconsider their source of ingredients, regardless of whether or not they are required to appear on the label.
With the ban on GE crops, Jackson County has ensured that not only will its farmers be protected from contaminated crops and seeds, but the county’s drinking water as well. GE crops are commonly over-sprayed with herbicides containing glyphosate because GE crops are resistant to the herbicide. The toxin then enters the drinking water and ultimately can affect the health of everyone who drinks it.
