Table Salt

General Info

  • Natural salt: 84% sodium chloride, 16% naturally occurring trace minerals, including silicon, phosphorous, and vanadium
  • Processed (table) salt: 97.5% sodium chloride, 2.5% man-made chemicals, such as moisture absorbents and flow agents. These are dangerous chemicals like ferrocyanide and aluminosilicate. A small amount of iodine may also be added.
  • In France, 35% of table salt sold contains either sodium fluoride or potassium fluoride and the use of fluoridated salt is widespread in South America. Fluoride has been linked with adverse effects, including brain, kidney, and thyroid problems.
  • Processing radically alters the structure of the salt. Refined table salt is dried above 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, and this excessive heat alters the natural chemical structure of the salt.

Unhealthy Components

  • Processed salt is 98% sodium chloride
  • The remaining 2% comprises man-made chemicals, such as moisture absorbents and a little added iodine. These are dangerous chemicals like ferrocyanide and aluminosilicate.
  • Some European countries, where water fluoridation is not practiced, also add fluoride to table salt.

Health Risks

  • Natural unprocessed salt has many health benefits, but that does not mean you should use it with impunity. An important factor is the potassium to sodium ratio of your diet, an imbalance in which can lead to:
    • Hypertension (high blood pressure) and other health problems
    • Heart disease
    • Memory decline
    • Erectile dysfunction
    • Cataracts
    • Osteoporosis

Alternative

  • Pure, unrefined salt
  • An ancient, all-natural sea salt from the Himalayas. Himalayan salt is only 85% sodium chloride, and the remaining 15% contains 84 trace minerals from prehistoric seas.
