SleepSmart and Wake up Feeling Refreshed

Yawning

For many, getting a quality night's sleep is few and far between. In fact, according to the 2005 Sleep in America poll taken by the National Sleep Foundation, many adults get an average of only 6.9 hours of sleep a night.

The way people wake up in the morning, however, is just as important as making sure they receive enough sleep at night, which is why Axon Sleep Research Laboratories came up with a novel idea: SleepSmart.

Wake up With SleepSmart

SleepSmart is an alarm clock that helps people awake each morning feeling refreshed by measuring their sleep cycles -- when they are in their lightest phase of sleep, the clock wakes them up.

When you sleep, you go through a sequence of sleep states that repeat approximately every 90 minutes:

  • Light sleep
  • Deep sleep
  • REM (rapid eye movement) sleep

The point in that cycle when you wake up could directly influence the way you feel later on. Thus, being aroused during a light phase of sleep means you are more likely to get up in the morning feeling perky.

How, exactly, does SleepSmart work? Using a headband equipped with electrodes and a microprocessor, the alarm clock records brainwave patterns during each phase of sleep. In essence, a device measures the level of electrical activity in a person's brain -- much as an EEG machine does -- then sends the data to a clock near the bed. After programming the clock for the latest time one wants to be woken up, the device will wake that person during the last light sleep phase before that.

A prototype of the clock is almost finished; Avon Sleep Research Laboratories plans to market the product by 2006.

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Admittedly, I love new gadgets, which is why this story initially caught my attention. I have not, however, included its story here because I think you should seriously consider purchasing a SleepSmart alarm clock when they become available.

In essence, this clock is simply another example of people coming up with a solution to work AROUND a problem, rather than facing it head on.

The creators of this clock came up with the idea because they were, admittedly, sleep-deprived. Being college students, they were likely staying up too late studying, partying, or some combination of the two.

Fatigue upon waking, though it does occur more readily if you awaken during certain parts of the sleep cycle, is also a classic sign of poor adrenal function. This condition is often a result of the stress that comes from a hectic lifestyle and lack of sleep, among other things.

Rather than addressing their fatigue issues by getting more, or higher quality, sleep, the students sought to create a solution that would allow them to continue with their lifestyles.

Using this clock will not hurt your health, but I think there are far better options for you to consider.

For one thing, the way this clock works means you may end up being awakened up to 90 MINUTES EARLIER than you would have otherwise. Losing 90 minutes of sleep is far more detrimental to your health than waking up a little groggy.

Besides, who in their right minds would want to sleep with electrodes attached to their heads?! Such a contraption could not possibly be comfortable, and could very likely be dangerous.

If you are in need of a good night's sleep, start with my free sleep guide. If that isn't sufficient and you need a gentle way to wake you up I could not recommend the dawn alarm system strongly enough. I don't need it now as I spontaneously wake up from 4 a.m. to 5 a.m., but when I wasn't able to consistently wake up by myself I regularly used it. I like it as it doesn't startle you and worsen your adrenals.

It wakes you very gently with progressively increasing light. What could be more natural? If you really are tired you will just sleep longer and until you are in a phase that will allow you to wake up gently. It seems to me that the dawn alarm system is a less expensive and more effective alternative to this gadget.
