Beware of Chip Labels Without Olestra

Frito-Lay's "Light" chips, formally known as WOW! chips, are responsible for a number of unpleasant side effects. Even though the chips are touting a new name, they are still being fried in olestra, a diarrhea-inducing fake fat.

The Center for Science and Public Interest (CSPI) has taken notice of these side effects and are trying to warn, as well as deter consumers from eating Lay's Light, Ruffles Light, Doritos Light and Tostitos Light chips.

The FDA has received more than 20,000 individual reports of olestra-related reactions, which is the largest response for any other food additive in history. The CSPI also sent the FDA 300 additional negative reports concerning olestra use. Some Frito-Lay's "Light" victims have reported seeking emergency-room treatment, while others have had embarrassing episodes of fecal incontinence.

Other commonly reported side effects include:

  • Cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Bleeding
  • Stained underwear

In light of these occurrences, a CSPI executive said Frito-Lay should have pulled the plug on their chips altogether. The FDA, on the other hand, doesn't seem to be taking any steps toward resolving this olestra-related problem.

In 2003, the FDA dropped the requirement for a warning label on packages with chips containing olestra. The label previously read: "This product contains Olestra. Olestra may cause abdominal cramping and loose stools. Olestra inhibits the absorption of some vitamins and other nutrients. Vitamins A, D, E and K have been added." The FDA also approved olestra for use in microwave popcorn.

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Don't let the marketers at Jays fool you with their new "Light" chips, formerly marketed under WOW! Chips, as they are still being fried in the problem-laden fat, olestra.

Although there are many adverse side effects linked to olestra, it doesn't matter whether chips are fried in olestra or trans fats. This is because chips are still one of the five worst foods you could possibly eat, no matter which fat they are fried in.

Fortunately, some companies have caught on to the recent media blitz about the dangers of trans fat and have started to produce chips without trans fat. Nevertheless, the high temperatures used to cook them will potentially cause the formation of carcinogenic substances, a risk that remains even if the trans fat is removed.

In order to fully understand the dangers of trans fat and the health risks involved with consuming it, I suggest you read Know Your Fats: Complete Primer for Understanding the Nutrition of Fats, Oils and Cholesterol by Mary G. Enig, Ph.D.

Her book dispels the myths about fat and will provide you with a very broad, yet in-depth discussion of the many aspects of dietary fats and oils in our foods and in our bodies.

I have said many times before and cannot stress enough that you should never eat any products containing olestra. Some of the problems associated with olestra use include:

  • Decreased absorption and blood levels of fat soluble nutrients, such as vitamin E and carotenoids
  • Significant increases in gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, including diarrhea, loose stools, and more severe GI effects
  • Increased risk of dehydration due to greater water loss through diarrhea

As you know, chips are made from potatoes, which are extremely unhealthy for you because their simple sugars are quickly converted to glucose. These sugars raise your insulin levels and can result in extremely devastating effects on your health.

That is why, when I consult with my new patients, one of my primary goals is to guide them away from eating processed foods. Ideally, 50 percent to 90 percent of the human diet should consist of uncooked or raw food.

If you are looking for some recommendations on starting a healthy eating program and eliminating junk foods, I suggest getting a copy of my TOTAL HEALTH Program for some great ideas.

Also, a much healthier alternative to snacking on potato chips is to snack on Cocochia, The Ultimate Snack Fuel. CocoChia is made from the freshest, organic sweet coconuts available and is a one-of-a-kind health and energy-boosting snack.
