Overweight Patients May Receive Incorrect Blood Pressure Readings

Blood pressure readings may come out artificially high if the wrong size arm cuff is used on an obese patient. The issue is becoming more serious as the prevalence of obesity worldwide has been increasing.

According to a study, eight percent of obese patients were wrongly diagnosed as hypertensive because a standard size cuff was used, as opposed to a large adult cuff.

A wrong diagnosis can lead a patient to start unnecessary drugs or antihypertensive treatments.

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

With two-thirds of the country overweight this is a very prevalent issue. It appears that up to 10 percent of overweight patients are incorrectly diagnosed.

If you are having your doctor measure your blood pressure make sure the cuff they are using is the correct size and your arm fits inside the markings indicated on the cuff, otherwise you may get a faulty reading.

Also be aware that so-called "white coat" hypertension, which occurs when a patient’s blood pressure increases just because they are in a doctor’s office, can also alter readings.

High blood pressure is a serious issue that can kill or permanently impair you, and it should not be ignored. It usually kills people slowly over time, but very high blood pressures can surely cause a stroke.

Normally, high blood pressure goes down quite quickly and easily by implementing three important factors:

  1. Eliminating grains and sugars as described in my Total Health Program
  2. Normalizing the stresses in your life. EFT is a simple and inexpensive tool that you can use to help in this area.
  3. Exercise

Further, the new recommendations that were recently issued on redefining hypertension by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute appear to be heavily influenced by the drug companies that are ever so eager to provide a drug-based solution for our health ills. Interesting that this solution also benefits their bottom line significantly.
