Benefits of Several Antidepressants Similar

Three commonly prescribed antidepressant medications are equally effective at treating depression.

The three drugs tested, Paxil (paroxetine), Prozac (fluoxetine) and Zoloft (sertraline) are all members of a class of drugs called SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. They battle depression by acting on the brain chemical serotonin.

The effectiveness of each of the three SSRIs is well documented, but there has not been enough evidence to know whether any of the drugs is more effective than the others, according to researchers.

The results of the study unequivocally demonstrate the lack of differences among Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft on a wide range of effects. The three SSRI antidepressants were not only similar in terms of their effect on depressive symptoms, but also on all the other domains of functioning and quality of life.

The frequency and types of side effects were similar in all three groups, as was the rate at which patients stopped taking the drugs or switched to another type.

Approximately one fifth of the patients switched medication one or more times during the study. Initial medications assignment had no significant effect on probability of improvement. Age and anxiety level did not predict better outcomes with any of the three drugs.

Numerous randomized trials have found no significant difference in clinical effectiveness between individual SSRI antidepressants for depression.

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Although several of the authors of the study and the author of the editorial have received funding from or work for pharmaceutical companies (big surprise) there are some important take home points from this study.

There is no question that these drugs have provided enormous symptomatic relief from the ravages of depression. I am equally certain that they have saved many people's lives by preventing suicide.

However, I am just as equally certain that these drugs rarely, if ever, are the appropriate long-term solution. They serve merely as a band-aid to temporarily resolve the symptoms.

As anyone who has suffered with depression knows, it is a devastating illness and needs to be aggressively treated.

I had planned on writing my first book on how one treats depression at the speed of light. However, circumstances changed and there were higher priority items so that book is now on hold.

However, I did quite a bit of research for the book and can provide you with the following insights.

The food you eat has a far more profound influence on your feelings than you think. This is particularly true for sugars and grain that require insulin to metabolize them. Elevated insulin levels will lead to disrupted serotonin and other neurochemicals that will lead to depression.

So following the eating plan is the first step.

The next step is to engage in a good cardiovascular exercise program that will improve one's sleep and secondary depression levels.

At this time of year making sure you have enough exposure to full spectrum lighting is another way to improve the Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) that frequently occurs during the winter months.

However, even if one had a perfect diet and exercise program, and exposure to real sunlight on a regular basis, it is quite possible to have a serious depression.

That is where one might consider the drugs mentioned above. However, there are far better alternatives.

The major one that I believe is a major breakthrough in medicine is EFT. I have successfully used it for hundreds of patients to facilitate their resolution of emotional stresses and traumas.

Many of these patients had been through many years of counseling. Traditional cognitive counseling is a wonderful tool and greatly benefits the effectiveness of EFT. However, by itself my experience in working with thousands of depressed patients is that it is rarely profoundly effective.

The drugs in the above article are not inexpensive. One month's worth is about equal to the cost of most EFT sessions. The beauty of EFT is that it tends to be rapid and permanent relief of the symptoms.

An even less expensive way to receive EFT treatment is to learn how to do it yourself. That is why I put together a ten-hour tape series that you can purchase for about the cost of one EFT session.

If the videos don't work for you, you have up to one year to return the tapes and actually find someone to do the EFT for you and find a permanent solution for the depression instead of a partial Band-Aid.
