Omega-3 World Expert to Talk in Chicago

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

My schedule limits me from attending many lectures, but I guarantee you I will be at this one. Folks, I've missed this one for far to long. If you have been reading the newsletter recently you will know that I have been seeking to provide you with the latest on this important topic.

Omega-3 fats are probably every bit as important as sugar restriction and maybe one of the most significant things you can do to optimize your health. Don't miss the boat on this one as you will certainly regret it. All that is required for most of us is a few fish oil capsules.

World renowned author and nutritional researcher, Artemis P. Simopoulos, M.D., will present a talk entitled "The Mediterranean Diets," at a meeting of NOHA (Nutrition for Optimal Health Association), on Wednesday, May 15th at 7:30 PM. The presentation, which will take place at the Radisson Hotel Lincolnwood, at Touhy and Lincoln Avenues, is free to NOHA members, $10 for non-members and $5 for students.

Dr. Simopoulos, President of The Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health in Washington, DC, was one of the first researchers to discover the virtues of omega-3 fatty acids through her studies of the diets of the Mediterranean peoples. She points out, "Many research studies have long proclaimed the superiority of the Mediterranean diet as being responsible for lower rates of heart attacks and cancer.

But many of these studies have not recognized that there are actually several "Mediterranean diets," nor have they analyzed the differences between the diets. Our studies, conducted through The Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health, found that the diet of Greece, with its high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, or ‘good fats’ -- as well as its excellent balance between the omega-3s and omega-6s -- is the best of these diets. In my talk, I will elaborate on this topic and tell more about these nutritionally important fats."

In addition to being the President of The Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health, Dr. Simopoulos is the author of several books on nutrition and omega-3 fatty acids, including The Omega Diet and Mediterranean Diets.

She received her MD degree at the age of 23 from Boston University School of Medicine, and was the youngest person ever to graduate from medical school in Massachusetts. Dr. Simopoulos chaired the Nutrition Coordinating Committee of the National Institutes of Health for 9 years, and was a consultant to the Office of Consumer Affairs during the Carter administration.

She has written over 280 scientific papers and is editor of the World Reviews of Nutrition and Dietetics. Dr. Simopoulos travels throughout the world speaking on nutrition, genetics and omega-3 fatty acids. In April, she will chair a major conference for the Chinese on omega-3 fatty acids in Shanghai.
