Diabetes Drug Rezulin Finally Withdrawn From The Market

The diabetes drug Rezulin was withdrawn from the market on Tuesday following a request from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The drug, which lowers blood sugar in diabetics, has been linked to potentially life-threatening liver failure in some patients. Rezulin had generated revenues of $625 million in 1997 and $748 million in 1998, but Warner-Lambert expected sales to fall to $400 million this year due to safety concerns. There are currently about 500,000 patients taking Rezulin.

Well for long time readers of this newsletter, this is not the first time you have heard about Rezulin. I have been warning folks about it for over a year. I am glad that it was finally withdrawn from the market. This drug was reported on in the June 20, 1999, December 19, 1999, January 23, 2000 and March 12 newsletters.
